On Saturday, November 8, Stephen Bennett performs at 8 p.m. with doors opening at 7 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church which is located at 22331 Woodward Avenue in Ferndale 3 blocks south of 9 mile on West side of Woodward. Tickets are available at the door for $15, Seniors/Students $10.

Whether playing his great-grandfather’s harp guitar, his 1930 National Steel or a standard 6 string, Stephen Bennett is a guitarist to hear. In live performance and on record, his diverse musical influences and interest are joined with a three decade long love affair with the sound of guitar strings.

Among many famous tunes Bennett has created, three of his harp guitar compositions have been included in compilations on the Narada label.  In addition to those are his arrangement and performance of the Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite that has been played on radio stations around the United States and is most regarded as the alternative version.

On November 9, 2003 starting promptly at 1pm, Bennett will be conducting a two hour workshop on his technique at the First United Methodist Church.  There will be limited seating and the cost of this workshop is $40.  People interested in the workshop must pre-register.  Click here for registration.

  • The Michigan Fingerstyle Guitar Society is very excited to announce that fingerstyle guitarist extraordinaire, Ed Gerhard,  will be performing live in concert on Saturday October  11th.  The performance will be at the Acoustic Avenue Coffee House in Ferndale.

  • Doors open at 7:00 pm.  Showtime is 8:00 pm

  • Tickets are $15.  Seniors & Student tickets are $10.   Tickets will be available at the door.

"From the top of his silvery hair down to his electric blue socks, Gerhard throws himself completely into every song he plays,” says Gail Johnson of the Portsmouth Press. In each performance, whether it be 6-string, 12-string, slide guitar or Hawaiian Lap Steel, Ed blends his musical intensity and sly sense of humor with seasoned aplomb. After mesmerizing an audience with a song, he’ll crack them up with an improvised joke then have them lost in the depths of the next piece before they know it."

"Pierre's music gives me the shakes. Even at its most complex, Pierre’s music only needs ears to be enjoyed." - Leo Kottke

"Bensusan demonstrated why he has become one of the most distinctive and influential finger-style guitarists. The pieces he performed frequently radiated a timeless modal quality that evoked everything from a slow Celtic air to a percussive Arabic chant. And there was no mistaking his finely honed technique as he went about exploiting the full range of his instrument." - Mike Joyce/The Washington Post (USA)

With a rare elegance, Mr. Bensusan measures every detail of tone, articulation and counterpoint in pieces that covered a lot of geography. The sounds he makes are ravishing. - The New York Times (USA)

  • The MFGS 2nd Quarter members meeting was held on Saturday June 22nd in Rochester Hills and was a huge success.   We had about 20 members attend which was about twice as many as we had back in May with our Q1 meeting.   One of the more popular ideas proposed at the meeting was to hold more frequent meetings.   The main intent being that we just simply get together and play.  No business or future planning will be discussed.    That being said, board member, Rob Anderson has scheduled a jam session at his place in Royal Oak on August 3rd at 6:00pm.  Click here to read Rob's message and get all the details.

  • If anyone else is willing to hold a Jam session at their place please contact us and we'll announce it to the group.

  • The MFGS 3rd Quarter Meeting is tentatively planned for the late August or early September timeframe.

We've also gotten a significant number of new MFGS members.  We'll be sending out an email within the next week informing everyone of our upcoming events.  We have our first members meeting tentatively planned for Saturday, March 23rd.   Location is still TBD.

The Michigan FGS is finally part of the Internet.   This website is being launched with the intent to promote fingerstyle acoustic guitar music.  We'll also be attempting to bring professional musicians into the area to play local venues.

We're hoping that this website will bring together other guitarists will similar interests.  In the future we plan to host events where we can trade tunes in an informal and relaxed setting.   It is also the intent to include all skill levels from the basement trained types to master level musicians.

This Sunday, December 16, alternate tuning specialist JB Davies will be appearing at the Starbucks in downtown Birmingham from 10am-12noon.  Appearing with him will be a couple of fine guitarists from Montreal Quebec, Frank LaRouche and Perry Sar.   The address is 135 S. Old Woodward Ave, Birmingham, MI.   Click here for a map.  See you there!
