The Duo
AL PETTEWAY & AMY WHITE perform an exciting blend of contemporary, Celtic-influenced, original and traditional instrumental music on acoustic guitars, mandolin, piano, Irish bouzouki, a bit of vocals and world percussion. Their signature sound is heard daily on NPR and is featured in a number of movies and documentaries. During their live shows, this husband and wife team captures the hearts of their audiences with colorful stories about the places and events that have inspired their music.

Al & Amy first began performing and recording together as a duo in 1995 and proceeded to win the 1995 Washington Area Music Association Award (WAMMIE) for "Best New Artist." Since then, they have become one of the most respected acts in the acoustic music scene and have now won over four dozen awards between them. They won the 1998 &1999 WAMMIES for Best Irish/Celtic Group and, for the past six years in a row, were voted Best New Age Group. They have been Artists in Residence at the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage and have performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the country.

After an impressive collection of seven award-winning solo recordings they released Racing Hearts, their first formal duo project. It was awarded the WAMMIE for best New Age Recording in 2000 and was followed immediately by their second duo recording Gratitude which won top honors in 2001 including an "Indie" award in the Acoustic Instrumental category from the Association for Independent Music.

"Al Petteway and Amy White are not only really and truly in love with each other - an energy that ricochets between them during their performances - they're also in love with creating their caffeinated, jazz-spiked acoustic brew."
- THE WASHINGTON CITY PAPER

"the duo weave(s) a sonorous and often sensual spell which is impossible to shake off. Technically confident and melodically assuredž a musical odyssey worth investigating."
- FOLK ROOTS MAGAZINE

- Garth Ross, KENNEDY CENTER MILLENNIUM STAGE

About Al
Al Petteway has played music professionally since he was twelve years old, performing nearly every type of popular, folk and classical music. Though his primary instrument has always been the guitar, he has also studied lute, string bass, percussion and music composition. His compositions for acoustic fingerstyle guitar are strongly influenced by his love of Celtic music and his own roots in folk, rock and blues. His recordings, music books, and instructional videotapes have helped to win him international acclaim and appearances on National Radio and Television Programs. Al has been awarded FORTY FOUR "Wammies" by the Washington Area Music Association including the top honors of "ARTIST OF THE YEAR" and "MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR". He was the recipient of two Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Awards for Music Composition and has performed at the Vice President's House and The White House. His playing is featured on more than sixty recordings by some of the World's best known Folk and Celtic musicians. He now performs exclusively with his wife, Amy White. He records and teaches private lessons in their home studio in Takoma Park, MD and is the Guitar Week coordinator for the world famous "Swannanoa Gathering" music camp at Warren Wilson College near Asheville, N.C.

"Al Petteway is quickly building a catalogue of some of the most beautiful instrumental guitar work ever recorded."

About Amy
Amy White was born to professional classical musicians and is the youngest of three children. As a result, she was nurtured and surrounded by several genres of music. Despite her upbringing, Amy never mastered sight-reading and she composes and plays music solely by ear. She has a unique approach to composition and her work reflects this serendipitous combination of classical, jazz, folk, world and environmental influences. Amy won her first award for music composition at the age of eleven. Her debut release, PIANO DIARIES, garnered the 1996 Washington Area Music Award for Best New Age Recording and two separate Maryland State Arts Council grants for solo instrumental performance on piano (1996) and mandolin (1998.) Amy's latest solo recording, BITTERSWEET, AN AMERICAN ROMANCE, is a second collection of piano instrumentals featuring Al Petteway on guitar, and Amy's father, retired National Symphony Orchestra oboist and principal English horn soloist, Richard White. Amy, Al and Richard participated in a special Thanksgiving Day broadcast of National Public Radio's "ALL THINGS CONSIDERED." This segment on 'Music and the Family' was hosted by Noah Adams and featured live performance of music from BITTERSWEET. Amy received the Maryland State Arts Council 2001 Individual Artist Award in Music Composition for her most recent piano and guitar compositions. She now performs exclusively with her husband, Al Petteway.

"...music of transporting power and beauty." "-shaped not only by a keen sense of lyricism and dynamics, but also a quiet soulfulness that continually draws in the listener."
- THE WASHINGTON POST

"Mesmerizing tone poems...just pure music...White continues to paint sumptuous portraits of life situations with a remarkable measure of clarity and color."
- JAZZTIMES

"White guides the listener from the profound to the whimsical and back again with all the ease of a brilliant conversationalist."
